Play Room Organization

Tags

I took a day off to finish the indoors organization I had scheduled for this summer. I thought I’d tackle the three “rooms” (actually all being one space) in half a day max, but it took me the whole day!

I’ll start with the easiest area, being the “play space” for the kids. The space also has a fireplace (last time used in the 80’s, we burn only candles there) and has an access to the bathroom and backyard.

image

I thought the area looked more like a pass through area than a functional space so I did some rearrangement with the furnitures. I also widened the space a bit (and made living room smaller) so that it would’t get too crowded.

image

The organization part of the room was quite good already. I just put the random items from the top of the fireplace to their right place. I also took all the toys down (also on top of the fireplace) so that the kids can reach those without any help.

image

I dream that some day this space could be a reading corner too… Imagine winter day, candles burning in the fireplace and me reading a good book in the sofa, while kids are playing nicely… ๐Ÿ˜‰

June Wrapup

June went by so fast! I had a fever and it took two weeks to recover from it and the little lady was sick too. Towards the end of the week I slept badly but formed a new habit during the weekend: have a daynap with our little sir!

Even though I had two weeks of no run, I’ve started to notice myself the effect of running four times a week. Not only am I getting faster but my body starts to get fit, even though my weight hasn’t changed!

A friend of mine had a graduation party and I was out the whole night! Had so much fun but the day after taught me that this time was probably enough for the rest of the year ๐Ÿ˜€

At home I finished my organizational goals, soon I’ve gone through the entire indoors! The garage has blown up so I really need to spend some time in there this summer!

I didn’t manage to have one-on-one time with my parents or hubby. I also didn’t read or have any beauty treats. The month really seems to be over before I really realized it had begun!

But we did have few nice local trips with the kids, went grilling and chilling ๐Ÿ™‚

Budgeting

I read few articles about YNAB this year but didn’t think it was for me as I’m not in the US.

Then two weeks ago I came across to it again and gave a deeper look. I watched the intro videos and decided to give it a try (no, it isn’t meant for US recidents only!).

The idea of having this easy four rule budget that would save my sanity was so tempting that I downloaded the free trial. Quite obvious rules but oh so hard to actually execute in real life!

I budgeted my current money and watched some more recordings. I budgeted the money I’d have next month and watched some more webinars. I deleted all my forecastings and re-budgeted the current money I had. One future budgeting target I left there, to buy YNAB once I’d get my paycheck!

I was tempted to enter ALL my transactions from this year to it to see what had went wrong, why have I been so stressed about money this year. I watched some more videos and realized that the money I’f had was gone anyway and there is no point to live with the money that had already gone. Only thing I could do was to pay more attention where I’d spend my money from now on.

Now I’ve been keeping an excel sheet on my budget for three years, so I’ve always known where my money has gone. But too late. I’ve made budgets to buy things with only a certain amount of money, but then I’d have 50e more in my account, so I’d spend it too!

Just to make my brain function clear, I think I earn my money and money is meant to be spent. Of course I have some savings but beyond that (for me and for the kids) but every other cent is to be gone. Not that there wouldn’t be targets to spend, I earn just enough to live comfortably with roof on my head (with big mortage) and food to feed me and my family. I do not have enough money to buy new clothes every month, but when I’ve had that “extra” 50e, that’s what I’ve done.

Anyway, now, after two weeks of using YNAB, I’m in the point where I have a reasonable budget for myself and for our family to start with. I have an app on my phone which tells me how much I can spend on what each given time. My plans have changed but for the first time I don’t feel quilty about it. I have started my buffer money saving AND will soon have paid my credit card debt! All this in two weeks!

And all this has cost me 0e, thanks to the free trial! I’m quite rarely advertising anything that you cannot get for free but the profit from this budgeting program exceeded my expectations by 1000%!

So I decided to buy it. Once I’d have the money (in one week). Especially that it is at the moment in summer sale!

Then on this very morning I attended to one of the webinars they do every week (got up at 5am for that!). And it turns out they give away one lisence after each webinar! And I won it!!!! I felt like a winner! Oh no wait, I was one!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

30e for my buffer! (It’s on sale.)

But I’d still buy it and would recommend everyone who has some issues or anxiety towards money or budgeting. I even heard on one webinar that if you’re struggling and after the 34 days don’t have the money to buy the software, they can extend it for you.

And if you’re a student, you can get it free until you graduate.

And if you’re just a normal person, the program is in summer sale NOW, AND I got a code with which you han cut it still few euros (dollars, whatever)!

Please note, I have not had any requests from YNAB to give an review of their software. I want to let you know that in case you do use the discount from me, I do get $6 (the same amount you’ll get off). So win-win! Then YOU can do the same thing! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Just wanted to share this post immediately so you could take advantage on the sale price and my discount!

Hallway Organization – part III

Tags

So I actually ran out of time and didn’t finish this one with the day off I had. This was quite a huge job to tackle. Being the entrance of our house, this is where we leave our clothes, bags, mail and phones. This is also the space where we have the “command center” (which still needs some serious fine tuning, will be a separate post once ready). This is the space that connects the bedrooms, kitchen and living room so there is quite a lot traffic in here at all times.
image

We have a big mirror cabinet where we keep our jackets and kids outdoors clothes, shoes, biking helmets and my scarfs. In the upper cabinets we have cords and had the empty containers. Now I left the space open.
image

Then there is this small counter with cabinets, where we keep the kids hats and gloves as well as some random stuff that has no other place (hubbies shooting hobby (no guns here!!) stuff, my heart rate monitor, umbrella, ikea bags, blankets for stroller etc). This counter has always been really messy and hard to keep clear. I tried adding some candle decoration on it to keep it serene and clear but it didn’t help. I tried to add a pretty basket on it but it ended up so full that we put a cup on it to keep more stuff on it.
image

Clearly this is a clutter space where thing tend to pile up. I feel that there needs to be a basket for this clutter but I realized I could hide the basket in the cabinet. Lets see if that helps.
image

image

In the open shelves I have small baskets for the kids hats that are currently in use. The little lady loves to dress up so she often picks up these baskets to dress herself (the hat is the only thing she can dress on her own). These are really easy as they are light and the kids know to put their hats (and gloves) here.

Feels a lot bigger space now that there’s some air around ๐Ÿ™‚

So during my day off I tackled one more thing, the tiny space in the doors between. Here we have the electricity control board (or whatever) which takes half of the cabinet. We also have some shoes and hubbys clothes here. And one big empty cabinet (!!). As the space is tiny, I don’t like to use these cabinets. The inner door opens to the cabinet doors, so if I need to access something here, I need to close the inner door and only after that I can open the cabinet doors. But hubby likes to store his outdoor clothes here, so why not.
image

I put a container to the cabinet, as here we keep the junk that is to be recycled in some special way (like old batteries and broken electricity devices). With the container those are easy to grab to go when it is full. As we don’t keep our jackets in the hanging rod, I got an organizer with pockets and that could be hung up there to store the gloves, scarfs and hats of my hubby there. He tends to forget what he has and buy duplicates so now he sees what he has, and after half a year (when winter again comes) won’t need to try to look for those items from anywhere (as they can always be available here because the space is not needed to anything else).
image

In the empty cabinet I stored the empty baskets and containers we have (at the moment two!). Hubby was quite happy with this organization I did ๐Ÿ™‚

And one detail from this between room: a key cabinet. I love it!

Hallway Organization – part I

Tags

Ok, so as I didn’t spend the whole day off in the kitchen, I drew my attention to the hallway. In the actual hallway (which leads to the bedrooms) we have the cleaning cabinets. Close to the entrance we also have cabinets for clothes, and a tiny space between the front door and inner front door (sounds complicated but I don’t know which other way to explain it) with cabinets there too (I know, we do have lots of cabinets, it was one of the reasons we bought this house!). In this post I’ll show you the cleaning cabinet and then in the second the space between and in the third the entrance cabinets (where I did the biggest job).
image

So the cleaning cabinet is actually designed to contain the vacuum cleaner and other related stuff. There is a small cabinet in the closet, which has a key and there we keep the most poisonous cleaning stuff. I had this cabinet in a pretty good order, I just changed a bit the location of the shelves to have a better functionality. I put the buckets and dusting things low so that the kids can also reach those. Cleaning agents are up in a container (so that I can pull the container out to reach what I need) and in the upper cabinets we have some tapestry and paints (leftovers from the previous owner, but usable still) and candle things (which I love!).

Just some re-organizing, but now this space is also so much better!

Kitchen Organization

Tags

One day I took a day off. I put the kids into day care and sent the hubby to work. And spent almost the whole day in the kitchen, having one main goal in my head. To have the counters as empty as possible. Mission accomplished!
image

image

Luckily I didn’t need to organize all and every cabinet as I had already done it last year.ย  Now I moved just some stuff from one place to another to get more space for the stuff I had on the counters. I did some re-organizing in the baking cabinet to put all related stuff in there.
image

The black fabric box is for recycling paper and I wanted to put it out of sight as it always blocked my view to the kitchen table. Having that away, clearing the counters was easier than I thought. Now we have the space to cook and bake without needing to make more space. Me likes!

May Wrapup

This month felt like decently productive month. I got a energy spike and almost finished organizing two bathrooms and washing room. I sold few things and managed to declutter quite a lot.

I’ve run quite a lot and signed up for half a marathon!! So I started to train for that, not that I’d run faster, my goal for this fall is the distance, not the time. One more great thing is that my working place decided to support the excercise of our people, and will pay the costs of the marathon event for all who wanted to participate to it!

We finally had “a date” with the hubby, we went for a party to another city and spent a night in a hotel, without the kids! Great weekend!

I spent one evening with my mom too but with dad I couldn’t find time to be just the two of us.

I didn’t go to any beauty treatments or read much (instead, I ran!). I did manage to sleep enough and spent time with the kids.

All in all, I really liked this month. Also, summer came!

Shower Room and Sauna Organization

Tags

I think after that kitchen this room is the most used room in our home. Here we do the laundry, wash up, get dirty clothes off, change diapers and potty train. As basically everywhere in Finland, we too have our own sauna. Luxury especially after a long run, or (in any other way) hard day!

image

The organizational status wasn’t too bad, but somehow the rooms function has changed after I returned back to work, and the kids have grown. The little sir uses only night diaper and I think the little lady starts to be fed up with changing on the chanching “table”.

image

I was clever last fall and bought another laundry basket, one for colorful and one for white laundry. The downside was that these two baskets really take some space. As we dry the laundry here too (with no dryer), the space can be really crowded. Try to fit two bathing kids here too (and that we do almost every day)!

image

I started by moving all diapers into one side. We have also washable diapers which I used when the little sir still wore diapers. With the little lady we’ve been lazy but we still have them, if we feel we’d still want to use those.

image

I organized all our medicines and accessories. Now we have a box for cat, kids and adults medicine, bandaids, muscle care and desinfection. These fit well with the towels.

image

I also moved all our shampoos etc into the shower room and used baskets to keep everything organized below the sink. Plenty of open space, which is occupied when we buy diapers in bulk.

image

All the shampoos that are in use are in a basket in a wire stroller so that we can easily lift them away when the kids are bathing (they fill the bath with shampoo for bubbles). The wire stroller is ugly but great for storing bath toys, they dry well and are easily accessible for the kids.

image

I love how the desk is now totally empty, the room looks so much bigger!

Bathroom Organization

Tags

This bathroom is mainly used for tooth brushing and storing toiletries.

image

It is located between the shower and sauna and the hallway.

image

And it really looked like I’d never done any organizing here, shelves packed with stuff and others completely empty.

image

I started by transferring the shampoos etc products not used in the bathroom into the shower room.

image

I also removed one shelf to be able to put all the big bottles behind the doors too.

image

Then I used baskets to store stuff in the lower shelves, because the space is so small, so it’s difficult to peek at the end of the shelves and things get easily lost there. On the bottom right there’s the adjustable thermostat for the floor heathing in the shower room, so I kept the space free for easy access.

image

This bathroom also had cords on the cabinet, and as in the master bathroom, I hid the cords inside a cord box. I also added a plastic plant to give the bathroom some freshness.

Much better!
